Choreography as Gift

A choreography process with my mother, an invitation to step out of her social role, as mother, as wife / the studio space as a place for reinvention, a space to challenge the routine of the everyday / the challenge was to share choreographic instructions that invite movement instead of describing it.

This process happened over two sessions with outcomes as a film and performance.

  1. DOMINIQUE EXCELLED IN THE CHOREOGRAPHY IN THIS PERFORMANCE . THE 40 MINUTES THE PERFORMANCE LASTED KEPT ME IN RAPT ATTENTION . THE TWO PEOPLE IN THE PERFORMANCE SO MUCH ALIKE BUT SEPERATED BY MORE THAN A GENERATION ARE MOTHER AND DAUGHTER . THE SLOWNESS OF THE MOVEMENTS EMPHASISES THE AGING PROCESS .IT IS THE YOUTHFULNESS OF DOMINIQUE THAT SHOWS IN HER SUPLENESS AND GRACE AS SHE SLOWLY PERFORMS HER ACT WHILE HER MOTHER EQUALLY WITH GRACEE AND GREAT POISE FOR AN OCTOGENARIAN PERFORMS THE MOVEMENTS AND THE COLLAPSE FOLLOWED BY COMING TO THE UPRIGHT WITH GREAT INNER STRNGTH AND DETERMINATION .. I WAS FULL OF ADMIRATION HOW SUCCESSFULLY SHE HAD PERFORMED WITH HER DAUGHTER NEARLY HALF HER AGE WITHOUT A FAUX PAS . THE APPLAUSE WAS GREATLY MERITED ,AND PROVED THAT WITH THE ONWARD MARCH OF TIME WE CAN ,IF WE CHOOSE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE WITH PROPER EXCERCISE ,WITHOUT BEING A THEATR.E ARTIST , CONSERVE ONES MENTAL AND PHYSICAL FACULTIES AND APPEARANCE . IT WAS FOR ME , AT LEAST , THE UNFORGETTABLE IMPRESSION LEFT FROM THIS PERFORMANCE THAT UNFOLDS AS A DREAM EMPHASISING YOUTH AND AGE , HOW THEY CAN PERFECTLY COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER .
